Resume

Freelance Writing and Editing

  • Over the past decade I’ve acquired valuable experience writing for more than 30 publications, including scientific journals, online literary journals, trade magazines, consumer magazines, newspapers, Internet news sources, newsletters, niche publications, and books.
  • I’ve also been involved as an editor or assistant editor with magazines, newspapers, books, and a literary publication.  You can find out more about these projects in the publications section of this website.
  • Coworkers and former supervisors can attest: I am dedicated to clarity – readers come first.
  • Aside from writing for publication, I have experience writing and editing successful grants for education, art, and social justice-related causes.
  • I keep on top of my field as a current member of the Society of Environmental Journalists.  Incidentally, I am also a former member of the National Communication Association and Investigative Reporters and Editors organizations.

Public Relations and Marketing Consultation

  • Along with my general writing and editing experience, I have more than a decade of experience in public relations and marketing, having worked in the realms of eco-tourism, food production, higher education, and other non-profits.
  • I am adept at navigating the world of public outreach and opinion and am skilled in using social media and Internet marketing platforms.
  • My current challenge is to manage the marketing and outreach efforts of a growing food cooperative in northern Wisconsin.
  • Being aware of marketing and public relations industry trends is important to me, and so I have found great value in relationships with the Public Relations Society of America and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Education

  • M.A., University of Wisconsin – Superior, Communicating Arts, Speech Communication (Core) and Mass Communication (Cognate), May 2010
  • B.A., Macalester College, English (Creative Writing) and Environmental Studies (Biology), 2000.  Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude.

Life

  • I love to garden and was fortunate to have been raised by a family of gardeners.   In 2009, I participated in the Bayfield County Master Gardeners Program and as a result I am very active in regional community gardens, most recently the Beaser Community Garden in Ashland, Wisconsin.
  • Music has been a part of my life for the past 25 years.  I teach piano lessons and volunteer as a pianist, organist, and cantor at my church.  I’ve played the guitar and bass guitar in a number of musical ensembles, and I recorded a CD in 2004 of original songwriting.
  • Community is important to me and so I give of my time, most currently as the secretary of the Ashland-Bayfield Counties League of Women Voters.  I’ve also been secretary of the Alliance for Sustainability, though am no longer.
  • When I’m not gardening, playing some sort of musical instrument, or reading, you’ll most likely find me being active – walking, running, biking, hiking, boating, skiing, or taking part in a raucous ultimate Frisbee game!
